It's that time again! Time for another round of Angela's Favorite Things!
1. Butterflies
I cannot tell you when it began, exactly, but I know it was from a very young age. My
obsession infatuation with butterflies began long before I can even remember. There's something magical about them that just makes my heart smile. Butterflies are often used when representing a new creation, a new life, or the fragility of something. Not only are butterflies somewhat magical, they are absolutely gorgeous! Who would have thought that a creepy crawly little worm/caterpillar could become something so breathtaking! Did anyone else wear those flutterbies in their hair when they were younger? No? Just me? Oh. Well....trust me...they were ALL the rage when I was in 5th-7th grade!
2. Starburst Mirrors
Upon seeing my first starburst mirror, I had to do a double take. It was love at first sight. What isn't to love? It's glitsy, it's glam, it makes a statement, it reflects light, one can admire oneself in it, etc. These little babies are SUPER popular right now. Heck, even Target is carrying them! One of my favorite design bloggers (located in Charlotte, NC!),
Emily, just mentioned them in her blog post yesterday. Someone recently asked her if she thought starburst mirrors were out of style. I LOVED her response! "Does it really matter if they are or aren't in style?"I still don't have one in my house, BUT I do plan on making one ASAP using
THIS DIY tutorials! I kinda like it even more than the $450 one shown above!
3. Gray and Yellow
I have a love-hate relationship with gray and yellow. For years, I have LOVED this color combination. There's something equally cheery and melancholy about this pair. I LOVE bright colors, but I also value the tranquility of more subdued colors. I don't think I'd go as far as having yellow cabinets in my kitchen as seen in the picture above, but using bright yellow as an accent color in ANY space is wonderful! The hateful part about my relationship with gray and yellow is that it's trendy right now. I am no hipster, so please don't think I'm "so over" gray and yellow, but I also am not of fan of trends and fads just for the sake of being trendy...or fiddle-faddling around with my tastes just to keep up with the Jones'. (I googled what fad is short for. I was told it might possibly be short for fidfad, which is short for fiddle-faddle. Who knew???) Anyway, gray and yellow, don't worry, I haven't forsaken you. You're still high on my list of color combinations somewhere around where navy and pink and purple and yellow meet.
So what do you think of my favs? Do we share any of the same favorite things? Do you think I'm incredibly juvenile for still loving butterflies? (Psch...am not!) Are you into starburst mirrors or are you more of a traditional mirror sorta gal? Do you fancy yellow and gray together or do you prefer your more traditional or flamboyant color palette?
I love that 2nd star burst mirror - looks so cool!! :)

I like the starburst mirrors so much! I never thought of a DIY project. I might need to hop on that. I definitely like the second starburst mirror better because it doesn't looks so industrial. The lines aren't chunky.
ReplyDeleteI most definitely wore those butterfly clips. They were totally in style. ;) We were so cool.
I kind of like the fact that great styles are becoming popular because the things you need to make something awesome is available. When it's not in style it's hard to find what you want sometimes. I also like it because I'm decorationally (yes I made that up) challenged. I'm really bad at thinking ahead and knowing what will look great where so it's nice that people put ideas together and I can do my own thing from there. The difference between someone who's trying to keep up with the Jones' and someone who genuinely likes it is what happens after it stops being trendy. I really like the whole gray with a bright color (not necessarily yellow) but I'll like it even when the fad is over. Don't not do something just because it's cool right now. By next year it won't be cool. :)

Cami- I agree! It doesn't look DIY at all!!
ReplyDeleteAsh- I totally agree with you about the don't NOT do something just because it's trendy right now. I, too, have issues carrying out a design concept. I am a visual learner. Heh. If we ever conceive, we are def painting the nursery gray and using yellow and lavender as accent colors for a girl and aqua and yellow or green and yellow as accents colors for a boy. Or possibly none of those. ha. I REALLY love navy, gray and yellow, but it feels too nautical to me...buuut Vance loves nautical. Ha. Anyway, I also agree with you about the mirror. I like the less industrial look, too. I also live in a 110 year old home so industrial doesn't work even if I DID like it!

I'm loving gray right now, with all sorts of color combos. If I were redoing a bedroom or living room right now I'd consider gray with almost any color w/ it and it looks great. Although, it is trendy, like you said.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your post over on my blog. You were right on the money - I went out and did some stuff I couldn't do while we were in the IVF cycle: went out to a smokey dive bar and drank beer with my husband! It was so much fun to spend time with him and to go do something that you can't do on cycle (or when you have kids!) in the middle of the week. Wayyyyy better than my normal routine of staying at work till 8pm then falling asleep as soon as I get home. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the yellow and grey! (That was the very tentative plan for the nursery.) I think the fact that it's trendy is part of the reason I love it - you see more pictures of it, and more examples of how it is done well, when it's "hot". Over the past few years though, I've been developing a love of pretty much anything with yellow accents, so I'm not sure if I eventually would have fallen in love on my own, even if there weren't tons of trendy pretty pics out there.
@Marissa- I agree with what Ash said. If you like it, who cares if it's trendy?? :-)
ReplyDeleteBeth- You're so welcome. I'm so glad you got out of the house. Even though, I'm sure, it was only a momentary distraction, I'm sure it still felt nice! I totally agree with you on loving the examples that are posted! Yellow is a fun color to accent with! :-)
