12 Days of Christmas--Day 12--Christmas Anything

Today is the 12th and final day of Christmas at Angela's Favorite Things! Today's post is a modge podge of Christmas wonderfulness! I hope you've enjoyed the last 12 days! I know I have! :-)

1. Live Nativities
Growing up we used to go to these all the time as a family. The hubs and I tried to go to the one down the street from us this year, but I sadly had to work!

2. Progressive Dinners
Before we started attending Pinedale Christian Church when I was in fourth grade, we attended a tiny congregation that met in a community center on Sunday mornings, Clemmons Christian Church. Every year, we had a church wide progressive dinner that was so yummy and SO fun! I really miss doing those each year!

3. Caroling
I know I had a whole day about Christmas carols, but caroling is different! I miss going to nursing homes, neighbors, etc. and singing to them about the birth of Jesus! It's a tradition I hope to bring back in my family when I have kids!

4. Wrapping Presents
I LOVE wrapping presents! It's fun to choose wrapping paper that suits the person, to decorate the package with ribbon, bows, gift tags, and possible a bobble or two, and to see the wrapped presents under the tree! I wrapped presents last Wednesday night while watching The Santa Clause 2 with the hubs. Super fun!

5. Candlelight Service
One of my earliest memories is attending Candlelight Service at church on Christmas Eve. I love getting together with my church family on the night before we celebrate Christ's birth. The songs we sing, the short devotion we hear, the special music/dance presentations, etc. all come together to form a wonderful tradition that I look forward to each year.

12 Days of Christmas--Day 11--Christmas Books

Today is the 11th day of Christmas here at Angela's Favorite Things! Today's topic is Christmas books!  Reading has always been one of my favorite things to do! Growing up, we had the tradition in my family where my mom read The Polar Express to us on Christmas Eve. I love that book! I hope to carry on a similar tradition when the hubs and I have kids one day!

Here a few of my favorite Christmas books...

1. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg

2. The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado (My sister Hannah ADORED this book when she was little.)

3. The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore (This version was my favorite growing up! I loved Little Golden Books!)

4. Cosmic Christmas by Max Lucado

5. The Candymaker's Gift: Legend of the Candy Cane by Helen and David Haidle

12 Days of Christmas--Day 6--Christmas Movies

Today's (late) 12 Days of Christmas post, Day 6, is about Christmas Movies. Some of these are classics. Some are contemporary. Some are made for TV. Some went to the big screen first. All are beloved by me!

1. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Claymation version!)

2. Elf (Smiling's my favorite!)

3. Snowglobe (Made for ABC Family.)

4. A Charlie Brown Christmas (I still get teary-eyed when Linus does his soliloquy.)

5. The Santa Clause (Tim Allen playing Santa? C'mon!)

12 Days of Christmas--Day 5--Christmas Traditions

Moving right along with the 12 Days of Christmas here at Angela's Favorite Things!  Today's topic is Christmas Traditions! My family is chalk full of tradition! Here are 5 of my favorite!

1. Ornaments
All the "kids"/"grandkids" of the family get an ornament each year. Actually, my sisters and I get THREE a year! (No wonder my mom had to have two trees while we all lived there! No wonder my tree is already full and I'm only 26, and I don't have kids, yet!) My grandparents on both sides of my family give us each an ornament every year, and my mom gives us one as well. This is my 26th Christmas. You do the math!

2. Drawing Names
We draw names each year in my husband's and my family. In my family, we all put our names in and draw out one per person. Then within the limit, we buy each other gifts for the following year's Christmas. In Vance's family, we only draw names among the siblings. (There are 8 of us, including myself, but this year we also included my brother-in-laws girlfriend and my sister-in-laws boyfriend.) It's so fun to keep it a secret all year long (on my side) and for a month (on Vance's side.) I love buying presents for people!

3. Multiple Christmases
We have Christmas four or more times. Seriously. Christmas Eve is church, Vance's family's house for dessert and games, and the last two years, we've spent the night at my parent's house where we open the presents from my grandparents who live in NY. Christmas Day has three different houses! Whew. I'm tired already! We open presents on Christmas morning with my parents and sisters. We have breakfast there (monkey bread and orange juice!) and then head over to my Grandma's house for a non-traditional Christmas tradition dinner of Northern BBQ, noodles, jello salad, punch, etc. THEN...later that afternoon, we head over to Vance's parents' house and have Christmas dinner with his family and open presents with all of them. THEN! We have Kahl Family Christmas on whichever day works for everyone's work schedules that current year (this year is Dec. 29th.) We all get together and have a traditional Christmas dinner, tons of goodies, and exchange presents. :-) Christmas times a million!

4. Dog Pile
So, just to clarify, we no longer hold this tradition. When you read on, you'll understand why! When Hannah was about 2 (she'll be 17 in March), Hannah, Kristin, and I would all sleep in my bed on Christmas Eve. (Now you see why we stopped this. Adding my husband to the mix makes it creepy!) I had a queen sized bed, so it was always in my room. I also had cable TV in my room before Kristin did. We would watch tv (usually A Christmas Story) and fall asleep in my bed. Throughout the night, Hannah would usually end up at the end of the bed...or on top of one of us. As we all grew up, we decided to kick Hannah to the end of the bed before we fell asleep...and then eventually to the floor. (She was ok with it!)

5. Decorating the Tree Early
Depending on your family, you may wait until Christmas Eve to "trim" your tree. Some people wait until December. In my family, we always put the Christmas tree up right after Thanksgiving. The reasoning? My birthday is December 6th and I wanted it up for my birthday parties! :-) I still carry on with this tradition. It just isn't my birthday anymore if the tree isn't up!
My tree this year!
